Let’s talk about access. Imagine everyone you know having 24/7 access to you. How annoying would that be? Well, in an era where we have calls, texts, social media, DMs, email, facetime, and other mechanisms, everyone you know kind of does have constant access to you. If you don’t put boundaries into place, the world can be a free-for-all of people reaching you.
Now imagine the amount of people you know multiplied thousands of times. It would be unbearable to have that many people being able to reach you at any point in time. That’s a reality that celebrities deal with.
People think that because they follow a celebrity on social media, that they know that person and thereby are entitled to access to them. Fans DM celebrities as if they are friends. If there’s a major issue in society, they look to celebrities and expect them to speak on it. Public dinners are disrupted with autograph and picture requests. And when a celebrity decline to acquiesce to a fan’s demands, then they are the bad guy. No consideration is given to whether that person is in a hurry, having a bad day, or simply just doesn’t want to be bothered at that time. Fans must do better.
In this day of enhance mental health awareness, people are still only out for themselves. They want whatever makes them feel good. Rarely do we think of how our actions can affect someone else. This is especially true when you have fame and feel like your life isn’t 100% your own. Think about this next time you decide to disrupt someone’s peace for your own selfish reasons. I’m not saying never approach your favorite celebrity, I’m simply saying there is a polite way to do things and the same grace you would want yourself should be given.
