I caught the season premiere of BMF on Starz in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The series is based on the real life story of the Flenory Brothers (Demetrius aka Big Meech and Terry) of Detroit who went on to form one of the largest drug cartels in the United States called the Black Mafia Family or BMF.
Lemme start off by saying that this is NOTHING like the Power universe, so if you go into this expecting it to look similar, don’t. The styling isn’t as slick as Power. It’s bare bones, kinda like Snowfall is. And the series starts off slow, but does so to build out the framework of each character, which is a good thing. I expect it to progress with each episode.
The first episode is directed by actress/director Tasha Smith, who also directed last week’s premiere episode of Our Kind of People which airs Tuesdays at 9 PM ET/8PM CT on Fox. And let’s give props to the magnificent singer/musician, Meshell Ndegeocello, who wrote and produced BMF’s soundtrack.
Oh, and before I forget, Big Meech’s son is starring as his father in the series. Tune into Starz on Sundays at 9 PM ET/8 PM CT for BMF.
