Upon his plea for help, We demand Parchman State Penitentiary take immediate action on behalf of Justin Hurst. In fear of retaliation, we demand transparency to the families of all men’s medical treatment inside MDOC facilities henceforth.
For over a month a Mississippi mother has been contacted by her son from inside Parchman State Penitentiary Unit 29. Her son, Justin is Diabetic and in desperate need of treatment for his condition. His mother was informed that his feet had swollen beyond recognition and that he has been refused medical attention or insulin for his diabetes for over a month.
His pleas for insulin are being ignored. Nurses make daily rounds and there are no meds to ease his pain. Because of his diabetes it is critical that any wounds that may be resulting from the neglect and his condition receive very careful treatment so that Justin, only 20 years old, does not lose his feet or more due to swelling and infection.
Each day without treatment is one in which he suffers in excruciating pain, barely able to walk with his feet becoming more and more swollen.
Calls have been made to MDOC and his mother has had the phone hung up in her face on multiple occasions for simply inquiring that her son be treated. Requests for insulin have been ignored for over a month.
As of today, he has received no medical attention and believes that his injury may be infected.
After multiple calls to medical’s UNIT 42 over the past 2 days, his mother has been unable to speak with anyone that has cared enough to do something to help him.
He feels that his safety and his life may be in danger. With 15 men having died in MDOC custody in the last month and many of the issues being precipitated inside by employees of MDOC, his concerns are extremely justifiable. He is one of several men in Parchman whose treatment has been neglected for over a month.
Although in fear, with feet so swollen that he can hardly move himself from his bed to stand, he has been driven to plead for help.
He is in Urgent Need Of Insulin and wound care treatment for his diabetes and to avoid any diabetes related conditions including swelling or the need for emergency Surgery on the untreated areas resulting from the failure to care for his conditions by MDOC. Under no circumstances should he have to beg for an feet and an entire body in this condition to be taken care of. Additionally, none of the other men inside should have to beg for adequate care either.
1. We Demand that Justin Hurst in Unit 29 of Parchman Penitentiary be treated immediately for his diabetes and any other related injuries.
2. We demand that Justin Hurst Receive proper medical care, medication, and rehabilitation for his injured feet and any infection that may exist as a result of a month of neglect.
3. We Demand The Safety of Justin Hurst, transparency in his ongoing treatment and condition with his mother, and the ability for them to consistently communicate with one another as he receives treatment. Additionally, we demand that no guard or employee interferes with his ability to receive treatment, or further aggravates his injuries but assist in insuring his treatment and access to treatment.
4. We Demand that all other inmates currently suffering from conditions that have gone untreated for the last month, last week, or last day, have immediate and swift access to the necessary medical attention necessary. If parchman is unable to provide the necessary attention that these men be released to facilities that can properly treat their ailments and conditions.
