John Singleton, director of multiple critically-acclaimed films, suffered a stroke on April 17, 2019. After almost 2 weeks of being in a coma, his family directed medical staff to remove Singleton from life support on April 29, 2019. He was 51 years old.
Conflicting details surrounded the state of his health up until the time of his passing. Several news sources prematurely reported that Singleton had passed earlier in the day resulting in his publicist releasing a statement that he remained in a coma. His sudden illness and subsequent death comes as a shock to the arts community. Friends and fans alike expressed their sadness and hopes for his recovery via social media. After his passing, many mourned a man and filmmaker still in his prime. Singleton was once quoted, expressing that he could have done more movies.
Having directed such iconic films as Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Rosewood, and 2 Fast 2 Furious, Singleton solidified himself as one of the most talented directors in Hollywood. At just 24 years old he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, making him the youngest person and first African American to receive such a nomination. Boyz n the Hood, the movie than garnered him that nomination, was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. He will be remembered as a director who created classic movies and other works on screen that reflected the Black experience and entertained a whole generation. Gone too soon.
